Abstract(s)
Obstructive sleep apnea is a chronic evolutionary disease, characterized by a respiratory effort in the collapsed upper airways, which has negative repercussions on the lives of individuals. The diagnose of this disorder requires a multidisciplinary approach, being the polysomnography an important diagnostic method. The most effective treatment is continuous positive airway pressure, however oral appliances are valid alternatives. Mandibular advancement devices are more efficient in improving symptoms and permeabilizing the upper airways, in comparison to soft palate elevators and lingual retention devices. The purpose of this work is to understand the role of orthodontics in the diagnosis and treatment of this disease, to compare the indicated intraoral treatments and to measure the most effective and used ones. To this end, a search in the “PubMed”, “B-on” and “Scielo” was prioritized, subject to inclusion and exclusion criteria.
