A diabetes mellitus é uma doença que afeta milhões de indivíduos em todo o mundo, acabando por ser um dos maiores problemas de saúde pública, obrigando o médico dentista a estar atento às alterações orais que esta patologia pode causar.
Este trabalho aborda as manifestações mais comuns da diabetes mellitus na cavidade oral, mencionando a fisiopatologia, os tipos, o diagnóstico e os seus sintomas. A hiperglicemia, para além de provocar complicações sistémicas, também está relacionada com complicações orais, como a doença periodontal, cárie dentária, disfunção salivar, candidíase oral, alteração do sabor, lesão periapical e halitose.
Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica utilizando os motores de busca: PubMed, B-on, Repositórios Científicos de Acesso Aberto de Portugal e Google Scholar. Foram incluídos artigos em português, inglês e espanhol, publicados entre 2003 e 2017.
Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem affecting millions of people all over the world. Therefore, dentists must be fully aware of the alterations that this pathology may cause to oral health. The aim of this paper is to show the most common manifestations of diabetes mellitus in the oral cavity, mentioning its physiopathology, the different types of diabetes, its diagnosis and symptoms. Besides its systemic complications, hyperglycemia is also related to oral complications such as periodontal disease, dental caries, salivary dysfunction, oral candidiasis, taste dysfunction, periapical lesion and halitosis. A PubMed, B-on, Scientific Open Access Repositories of Portugal and Google Scholar literature search was conducted. Articles written in portuguese, english and spanish, published between 2003 and 2017 were included in this thesis.
