Abstract(s)
O objetivo deste trabalho foi refletir sobre os efeitos deletérios do consumo de tabaco na saúde oral e sobre o papel do médico dentista no tratamento de pacientes expostos a estes riscos. Para atingi-lo, procedeu-se uma pesquisa na literatura científica e nos sítios de órgãos governamentais portugueses e de entidades supranacionais relacionadas à área da saúde.
O Médico Dentista está em posição privilegiada para reconhecer os problemas originados pela exposição ao tabaco, na cavidade oral. O tabagismo está associado ao cancro oral, doença periodontal, alteração dos tecidos moles orais, perda de dentes e implantes, entre outros problemas.
Identificou-se a existência de uma elevada percentagem no consumo do tabaco entre profissionais e acadêmicos da área da Medicina Dentária. Este facto permite concluir que estes profissionais necessitam reavaliar a sua postura perante o problema do combate ao Tabagismo, visando uma saúde oral de excelência para a Sociedade.
The objective of this study was to reflect on the deleterious effects of tobacco consumption on oral health and on the role of the dentist in the treatment of patients exposed to these risks. To achieve this, a research was carried out in the scientific literature and at the sites of Portuguese governmental bodies and supranational entities related to health. The Dentist is in a privileged position to recognize the problems caused by exposure to tobacco in the oral cavity. Smoking is associated with oral cancer, periodontal disease, oral soft tissue disorders, tooth loss and implants, among other problems. It was identified the existence of a high percentage of tobacco consumption among professionals and academics in the area of Dentistry. This fact allows to conclude that these professionals need to reassess their attitude towards the problem of combating smoking, aiming at oral health of excellence for the Society.
