Abstract(s)
Introduction: Endodontic retreatment consists of removing, disinfecting, preparing and filling the root canal system. Desobturation consists of removing the filling material from the tooth. Objective: This work will detail the different techniques used in root canal filling removal, and will therefore focus exclusively on the clinical phase of this procedure. Methodology: A bibliographic search was carried out in the PubMed database using the keywords: “endodontic retreatment”, “desobturation techniques”, “root canal filling removal”, “endodontic retreatment methods”, “non-surgical endodontic retreatment”. Results: The search and after removing duplicates resulted in 371 articles, initially evaluated using the title and summary, followed by full reading. In the end, 90 articles and 3 books were selected. Conclusion: Manual and mechanical systems have similar efficiency, and their combination allows optimizing root canal cleaning. Solvents aim to improve the removal of filling material, however the results are not satisfactory, and their effectiveness is controversial.
