Abstract(s)
Temporomandibular disorders are a set of clinical conditions that affect the temporomandibular joint and/or chewing muscles and surrounding structures. They are usually of multifactorial etiology and therapeutic intervention ranges from non-invasive, minimally invasive treatments to surgical treatment. However, in most patients cognitive-behavioural treatments are effective in their self-management, hypnosis being one of these techniques. The objective of this narrative review of the literature was to analyse and evaluate the efficacy of hypnosis in relieving pain and mandibular movement limitations associated with temporomandibular dysfunctions when compared to other therapeutic techniques. Hypnosis has proven to be useful in the process of managing stress and anxiety in relation to dental consultation and has also proven effective in improving pain perception, in chronic patients, however further study is needed to validate this technique as universal in the treatment of chronic painful temporomandibular disorders.
