Abstract(s)
Objectives: To assess how gingival exposure affects the perception of smile attractiveness, and whether this perception varies between laypersons (LPs) and dentists from different countries. It was intended to analyze whether gender, age group of participants and the main area of activity of dentists are relevant factors in this evaluation. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study. From a symmetrical facial model (SFM) 8 images were developed with different gingival exposures. Sample with LPs and dentists participants from France, Italy and Portugal, who completed an online questionnaire rating the self-perception of attractiveness of the 8 images (VAS: 0-10). Data analysis with non-parametric comparisons (IBM© SPSS® Statistics vs. 28.0), α=0.05. Results: For both dentists and LPs, the image perceived as more attractive is the image with EG 0mm, with dentists giving a lower rating of attractiveness compared to LPs. All dentists, regardless of the area of operation, converge considering the GE of 0mm as being the most attractive, with dentists linked to the area of aesthetics showing a lower tolerance. In the dentists class in Portugal and in the lay class in France, the perception of attractiveness of the images does not differ according to the respondent's sex. The female sex proved to be more critical in the perception of attractiveness, the same is not true for the French dentists class. With the exception of the French dentists class, there were significant differences according to the age of the participant. Conclusions: Factors such as country of origin, gender, age group, profession and area of activity had an impact on perceptions of attractiveness, however, there is a preference for the lowest GE.
