Abstract(s)
The elderly population of Europe, in general, in particular of Portugal is a fact that is constantly referred to in society. It is important to develop better ways to address the difficulties facing this growing population. Aging is not a problem, but a natural cycle of life, where it is desirable to live a healthy and autonomous lifestyle. This implies that the behavior and attitude of the general population needs to change, including educating, training the health care professionals and other social intervention organizations. It is also necessary to adapt health and social awareness to meet the new social and familial realities that accompany individual and demographic needs facing today’s elderly. The culture surrounding the elderly must be adjusted to address and meet their needs and demands. This graduation project had these objectives: To verify the level of satisfaction the elderly receive in relation to their health and social being; Identify the availability of assistance offered by IPSS; To verify the elderly consider the frequency of the care provided by IPSS is sufficient; To verify if the elderly reference any other health care need; To evaluate the level dependence of the elderly. To address these objectives a questionnaire was provided to twenty two elderly persons receiving assistance from IPSS, county of Ponte da Barca. The findings were processed through a statistical program, SPSS version 17.0. The results reflect that the elderly are very satisfied with the care received by IPSS; also in relation to the attention provided by the nursing staff. The results revealed that the majority of the elderly are independent.
