Introduction: It is currently known that newborns (NB), including preterm infants, perceive pain from 20 weeks of gestation, and that untreated pain has short- and longterm consequences. Thus, non-pharmacological interventions (NPI) are autonomous nursing interventions that can prevent and/or minimize pain. Objective: To map the evidence on non-pharmacological interventions used by nurses to minimize pain in newborns admitted to neonatal units. Methodology: This scoping review follows the guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute. The search strategy included the following databases and search engine: CINAHL, MEDLINE, LILACS, Scielo, PubMed, and grey literature, with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The 20 studies included in this review describe the NPIs used to minimize pain in neonatology. The studies were grouped according to invasive and/or painful procedures, and the NPIs were classified into categories. Conclusion: NPIs are safe, effective, and low-cost strategies for minimizing pain in neonatal intensive care units, especially when combined and adjusted to the procedure and the newborn. The need to standardize practices and use properly validated pain assessment scales was highlighted.
