Abstract(s)
Objective: The main objective of the present study is to investigate the perception that students in years 4 and 5 have regarding the factors responsible for antero-inferior crowding and to analyze whether they still consider the third molars responsible for the occurrence of this malocclusion. Materials and Methods: In this study, a questionnaire was applied to years 4 and 5 students of the Dental Medicine course at the Fernando Pessoa University. A bibliographic search of scientific articles was also made available in the electronic databases Pubmed, B-On, Science Direct and Scielo, whose inclusion criteria were: time limit of 20 years; language, selecting articles in Portuguese, English, Spanish and Brazilian and only articles with full text and free access were selected. Results: The most common answer given by years 4 and 5 students as a possible cause of late crowding of the lower incisors is the existence of supernumerary teeth, being the second cause most pointed out to be the third molar eruption. Male students point to possible causes with more scientific evidence. Foreign students consider the eruption of the third molar as the most capable cause of antero-inferior crowding. Regarding the factor that both years 4 and 5 students consider the third molar eruption as the main cause of the late crowding of the incisors, year 4 students presented better evidence. Conclusion: The eruption of the third molars as a cause of late crowding is still a very present idea in years 4 and 5 students of Dental Medicine.
