Abstract(s)
The influence of the oral cavity on athletic performance is a modern and growing topic. The search for an advantage in relation to the opposition is growing in importance each and every due to the fact that we are living in a more competitive and specialized society. Because of its influence and the role it plays in the organism, the oral cavity has the potential to provide such advantages and improve the overall performance of athletes. This bibliographic review aimed at: (1) collecting information on the effects of the oral cavity on the organism, (2) defining the causes and consequences of these same effects, (3) providing a general notion of how the oral cavity interacts and alters the rest of the body, (4) showing, by the use of scientific studies, that the oral cavity alters the functioning of the body and consequently the athletic performance. In the more competitive and specialized world we live now, there is a constant request and need for perfection. With a flawed and constantly adapting system (that is our body), the same search for perfection is asked of athletes. Within the sports community there is a common notion that an healthy mouth is important and leads to an healthy body. The importance and influence that the oral cavity has on the overall well-being is a common notion and we see that clubs and leagues require athletes to have regular dental screenings. Although these measures are encouraging for the future of sports dental medicine, a lot of them are enforced for bureaucratic reasons and with no real knowledge of its importance on the athletic performance. In this paper, we will seek to understand and show how the oral cavity has the ability to affect and/or improve the performance of athletes. The reviewed literature allowed the following conclusions: the oral cavity does in fact affect athletic ability, and this affect comes from its interactions with several systems such as the vestibular, oculomotor and somatic system; these have a reciprocal relationship with the stomatognathic system and modulate balance control; the oral cavity also affects the bodyâs posture which in turn is essential for the correct functioning of the body, and logically, the stomatognathic system also affects the muscular system. Recent theories hypothesize that affected craniocervical musculature may be the precursor for changes and painful stimuli in other areas of the body; the oral cavity also alters the limbic system which affects the emotional responses, stimulates the stress release mechanism and activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
