Nas últimas décadas tem-se assistido a um rápido envelhecimento da população mundial. Apesar da melhor preservação da dentição natural em idosos e da diminuição das doenças devido à melhoria das condições de vida, a prevalência de patologias orais neste grupo populacional ainda é considerada significativa. Este estudo tem como objectivo avaliar as consequências do envelhecimento na saúde oral e o seu impacto sobre a saúde em geral no grupo dos idosos. Pretende-se uma justificação para explicar o motivo pelo qual a saúde oral dos idosos é negligenciada pretendendo-se apresentar alternativas para melhorar a situação através da prevenção. A metodologia adoptada consistiu na revisão bibliográfica de artigos científicos publicados em revistas indexadas na Pubmed, B-on e Google Scholar entre 2006 e 2016, tendo por base as palavras-chave delineadas e critérios de inclusão e exclusão específicos, com o objectivo de reunir e debater o máximo de informação sobre esta preocupante situação.

Despite the better preservation of the natural dentition in the older people and the reduction in the number of diseases due to better living conditions, the prevalence of oral pathologies by seniors is still considered as significant. This study aims to evaluate the consequences of ageing on oral health and its impact on health more generally in the older people. The aim is a justification to explain why the oral health of the elderly is neglected to present alternatives to improve the situation in terms of prevention. The adopted methodology consists of a bibliographical review of scientific papers published in Pubmed, B-on and Google Scholar between 2006 and 2016, based on defined keywords and specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, with the aim of gathering and discussing as much information as possible about this worrying situation.
