Genetic and epigenetic influence on teeth agenesis: narrative revision

A agenesia é a anomalia dentária mais frequente que pode levar a problemas como a função e a estética e, portanto, ter um impacto na qualidade de vida dos pacientes. Ter uma melhor compreensão das suas etiologias multifactoriais é essencial para fazer o melhor diagnóstico possível e oferecer o tratamento mais adequado, se necessário.
Este trabalho é uma revisão narrativa das causas da agenesia dentária, focando particularmente as influências genéticas no seu desenvolvimento. De facto, para além da influência ambiental, a genética parece desempenhar um papel muito importante, quer seja através da agenesia sindrómica ou não sindrómica. A epigenética, que é o terceiro fator contribuinte mais importante, também é resumida. Para além disso, são também discutidas algumas possibilidades de tratamento.
Este trabalho de investigação foi realizado por pesquisa bibliográfica na PubMed Central (PMC), na Cochrane Library e na Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), bem como no Scholars Google. As palavras-chave utilizadas na pesquisa foram "agenesia dentária", "fatores genéticos" e "fatores epigenéticos".
Agenesis is the most frequent dental anomaly which can lead to problems such as function and aesthetics and therefore have an impact on the patients quality of life. Having a better understanding of its multifactorial etiologies is essential in order to make the best possible diagnosis and, if necessary, offer the most adequate treatment. This work is a narrative review of the dental agenesis causes, particularly focusing on genetic influences on their development. In fact, apart from the environmental influence, genetics seems to play a particularly important role whether it is through syndromic or non-syndromic agenesis. Epigenetics, that is the third influencing factor, is also summarized. Moreover, some treatment options are also discussed. This research work was carried out by bibliographic search on PubMed Central (PMC), Cochrane Library and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), as well as, the Scholars Google. Keywords used in the search were "teeth agenesis”, “genetic factors” and “epigenetic factors”.
