Abstract(s)
Introduction: Nowadays, social networks play a central role in the lives of their users, with young people and teenagers being the most frequent group. They have been in contact with technology and online platforms since birth. This use is often associated with risky behavior and psychiatric illnesses, wich is why it is important to understand the negative effects on mental health and develop strategies for conscious use that promotes well being. Objective: To map the existing literature on the impact of social networks on the mental health of young people and adolescents. Methods: A scoping review was carried out in September 2024 according to the methodology of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). The relevance of the articles was assessed, and the data was extracted and synthesized. Discussion: A total of 80 studies were identified, 16 of which met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the review. Social networks have a mostly negative influence on the mental health of young people and adolescents, with depression and anxiety being the most common psychological pathologies. Variables such as family support, hours of use, mode of use and gender have different implications for their psychological well being. Conclusion: According to the literature, it is possible to conclude that social networks have a stronger negative impact on the mental health of the target population, although there are also benefits to using them. It is important to make young people and adolescents aware of the importance of moderate and correct use and to provide a basis for the development of a stable and solid emotional forum. However, more studies are needed to better understand these results.
