Abstract(s)

They are the second leading cause of orofacial pain and cause changes in quality of life, especially when chronic and painful. TMD treatment should always begin with reversible therapies, among which ozone therapy is included. This narrative review of the literature aimed to analyze the potential of ozone therapy in the treatment of TMD, evaluating mechanisms of action and its effectiveness in TMD treatment. In the studies reviewed it was found that the use of ozone therapy has good potential in controlling the pain associated with different TMD, however, there is no consistent evidence that it is superior to gold standard treatments. Thus, further case-control studies with long-term follow-up should be conducted to verify the cost-effectiveness and the ideal protocols for the application of ozone therapy in the treatment of different TMDs.
