The sociocultural constructions of nature and environment: preliminary outcomes of a systematic literature review
Publication . Vidal, Diogo Guedes; Valentim, Cristina Sá; Freitas, Helena; Costa, Paulo Manuel; Alves, Fátima
The recognition of Nature and the Environment as sociocultural constructions is key to enhance a transformational socio-ecological change. That means understanding the production of their different socio-cultural meanings, how societies tackle them, and to what extent different understandings can condition the implementation of a deep socio-ecological change. To the authors' knowledge, no studies have systematized the evidence regarding this diversity of perceptions.
Citizen participation and climate change: social perceptions about climate change - a case study in the Central Region of Portugal
Publication . Alves, Fátima; Vidal, Diogo Guedes; Leal, Cátia; Castro, Paula
Research on social perceptions and effective participation about Climate Change (CC) appears to be a critical component of the socio-political contexts in which CC mitigation and adaptation plans and the necessary political and behavioral change for the ecological transition are developed. This study sought to develop itself as a strategy to involve populations in the elaboration of Climate Change Local Adaptation Plans, through a questionnaire survey applied online.
Facing the human health impacts of a changing climate: evidence from the southern European region
Publication . Alves, Fátima; Vidal, Diogo Guedes; Wlasenko Nicolau, Karine; Leal, Cátia
Extreme weather events caused by climate change, especially extreme heat and cold waves, are expected to increase in the next years. Due to its geographical characteristics, Portugal is among the European countries with the greatest vulnerability to these impacts, affecting disproportionality different socioeconomic groups, especially those with respiratory or circulatory health conditions, children, and the elderly. Set against this background, this study assessed the up-to-date knowledge of the current impact of weather and climate variability on the population health in the Central region of Portugal, namely the epidemiological evidence of the effects of heat waves and extreme cold on human health.
