Quais as suas fontes? Que rotinas tinham? Que constrangimentos enfrentavam? este trabalho visa responder a essas questões, socorrendo-se da pesquisa bibliográfica e documental e da análise do discurso, quantitativa e qualitativa, da Gazeta de 1641-1647, primeiro periódico português. conclui-se que os primeiros “jornalistas” portugueses eram clérigos letrados para os quais a redacção de folhas periódicas ou ocasionais seria uma “ocupação”, não uma profissão. Who were portuguese “journalists” that, in the first half of the 17th century, began journalism in portugal? they wrote about what? Who were their sources? What kind of routines they had? What kind of constraints they faced? this study aims to answer these questions. it is based in bibliographic and documents research and in speech and content analysis of the first portuguese periodical newspaper, the Gazeta (1641-1647). We have concluded that the first portuguese “journalists” were educated priests. for them, writing news gazettes were an “occupation”, but not a profession.
