- Disaster managment and the relevance of spirituality: rethinking humanitarian action through spiritualityPublication . Silva, Mariah Messias; Cardoso, João CasqueiraThis research explores the ways in which spirituality is understood and incorporated within contemporary humanitarian action. Although spirituality has historically played an important role in shaping social values, cultural practices, and ethical frameworks, it remains a topic that is rarely discussed and often avoided in current humanitarian debates. Rather than focusing primarily on historical analysis, this study adopts a critical and reflective approach to examine spirituality as an element of humanitarian work that tends to be undervalued or disregarded. The importance of this discussion has become more evident considering recent global developments, such as political transformations, the growth of conflicts with religious dimensions, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and global megatrends. Additionally, the increasing allocation of public resources to military and security priorities has contributed to a reduction in funding for humanitarian initiatives. These changes have intensified demands on humanitarian organizations to respond quickly and effectively, while also highlighting the need to rethink existing approaches and assumptions within the sector. It is commonly observed that in situations of crisis and uncertainty, people frequently seek forms of support that go beyond material or practical solutions to find purpose, inner strength, and emotional resilience. This search for meaning is often associated with spirituality. In this study, spirituality is understood in a broad sense, extending beyond formal religious traditions, and recognizing that perceptions of the sacred and of transcendence differ according to personal experiences and cultural backgrounds.
