- Prosthetic obturator and voice changes in maxillectomy patients: a systematic reviewPublication . Rizzo, Gabriella; Oliveira, Filipa Pinto deAfter maxillectomy, the patient is left with a deficient bone area, generating a possible defect that can lead to communication between the oral and nasal cavity, resulting in functional, speech, and aesthetic disorders, in addition to compromising the patient’s quality of life. Among the treatment possibilities is reconstruction, but under certain conditions, rehabilitation may involve an obturator prosthesis. The objective of this study is to verify whether there are vocal changes in maxillectomized patients after the placement of an obturator prosthesis and whether this has an impact on their quality of life when using or not using the prosthesis. An electronic bibliographical search was conducted in the PubMed, BioMed Central, and Science Direct databases. Identification and selection of articles were carried out by applying previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria. The screening of found articles was performed using the PRISMA method. The methodological quality assessment was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool for cross-sectional studies and randomized controlled trials. A total of 72 articles were identified. Based on the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 articles were included in this review. Among these, 8 were cross-sectional studies, 1 was a randomized clinical trial, and in 1 study, the methodology was not clearly described, but it was included due to its voice analysis focus. It was concluded that with the placement of a prosthetic obturator, there is an improvement in speech intelligibility, an increase in the frequency of the F3 formant, and a reduction in hypernasality.
