- Analysis of dental implant fixtures fractures: incidence, factors and characteristicsPublication . Oumalou, Karim; Pereira, JorgeImplant fracture is one of the rare complications in implant dentistry that leads to implant failure. Such complications pose significant problems for both the patient and the dental surgeon. The objective of this comprehensive review was to examine how particular implant characteristics — such as diameter, length, design, connection type, position, and materials — can lead to various biological and mechanical complications contributing to fractures or cracks in the implant fixture. Methods: A bibliographic search was conducted using PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore and Google Scholar databases, from which 16 studies were selected. Results: The review highlighted the location of fractures and reported a mean incidence of 0.65% in titanium implants. Most implants functioned for 3 to 5 years before fracturing. However, the studies did not provide sufficient data to establish a clear correlation between implant parameters and fracture incidence. Conclusion: Implant design, particularly connection type, diameter and composition, significantly influence the risk of fracture and determine the type, position, and direction of fixture fractures. The proposed classification system may assist in identifying and understanding fracture mechanisms, supporting prediction of failure points and standardization of terminology among professionals.
