- Role of ultrasound in the endodontic retreatment: systematic reviewPublication . Lombardi, Giuseppe; Guimarães, DuarteEndodontic retreatment is a necessary clinical procedure in cases of failure in the treatment of the root canal system in a dental element. It consists of removing the previous obturation material from the root canal system, followed by a new chemical-mechanical preparation, disinfection, and filling of the root canal system. When used in combination with suitable magnification and illumination systems, ultrasonic tip inserts are an effective tool for removing endodontic obstacles. They are also useful for activating irrigation solutions, increasing their effectiveness in cleaning the root canal system. The objective of this work is to compare the effectiveness of hand-held instruments with ultrasonic instruments, thus indicating in which clinical situations the available techniques can be used. This systematic review follows a PICO strategy. Searches were conducted in the databases PubMed, B-On, SciELO, Google Scholar, and Science Direct using the following keywords: endodontic retreatment, ultrasound, manual instruments, applying eligibility criteria. Eleven studies evaluating the use of ultrasound in removing remnant obturation were found. The findings of this systematic review demonstrated that no method can completely eradicate gutta-percha and filling cement from the root canal walls, especially when the canal is flattened or has an isthmus. However, ultrasound can improve the results.
