- Photobiomodulation therapy: a narrative review of the literature in the dental hypersensitivityPublication . De Petris, Giulia; Castro, Ana RitaIntroduction: Dental hypersensitivity (DH) is an acute and severe pain, which results from dentin exposure to several innocuous stimuli. Objective: The aim of this paper was to perform a literature review describing the mechanism of dental hypersensitivity, its etiology, risk factors, theories, diagnosis and to evaluate the efficacy of low-power laser or photobiomodulation (PBMT) when applied to DH. Methods: A narrative review of the available literature was performed using the Pubmed, Google Scholar, B-on, MEDLINE databases and as keywords dental hypersensitivity AND Therapy OR Laser therapy. Results: PBMT is effective and safe in the treatment of DH, however clinicians should be careful when using this tool and always keep updated. Conclusion: There are several existing treatments for DH, but photobiomodulation has gained prominence for its ease of use and effectiveness in reducing pain and preserving pulp vitality.
