Abstract(s)
Objective: To evaluate the use of pacifiers in premature babies with regards to dental development, capacity for independent oral feeding (breastfeeding), and duration of hospitalization. Methodology: Systematic search in the PubMed and Science Direct databases. The MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) keywords used were premature baby, pacifier, breastfeeding, and sucking behavior, combined with connector term AND. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and 52 articles were selected. Conclusão: Premature babies face many challenges due to the underdevelopment of the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and muscular systems. Among these challenges, oral feeding presents a serious problem. A growing body of literature suggesting that the use of non-nutritive sucking techniques, such as pacifiers, can offer significant benefits, facilitating feeding and promoting oral development.
