Abstract(s)
This study aims to raise awareness among parents and legal guardians of children and adolescents who practice sports regarding the dentoalveolar traumas to which they are daily exposed, a problem increasingly relevant in the pediatric dentistry community. The objective of the study was to understand the level of risk perception of parents and legal guardians regarding this issue, their degree of knowledge about emergency measures to be taken in case of an accident, and how to improve community information through primary prevention. The data were collected through an anonymous questionnaire, distributed in digital format, directed at legal guardians of children and adolescents aged between 3 and 16 years, with the prerequisite of being active athletes at any level. Part of the descriptive analysis was conducted using Microsoft Excel 2016, and the results were statistically analyzed using the SPSS® program. The study sample consisted of 316 parents and legal guardians of children and adolescents, with 158 of Italian nationality and 158 of Portuguese nationality. About 13.3% of the children/adolescents involved in the study had never had a first dental consultation. In the Italian sample, 79.1% of respondents believed that the dental care required by a child practicing sports is the same as that of a non-sporting child, while in the Portuguese sample, this idea was shared by 61.4%. In both countries, 69.9% of respondents considered that dental traumas in the pediatric sports context occur with the same frequency as in other everyday life situations. Furthermore, 84.1% stated that they were not satisfied with the existing community information about emergency maneuvers in case of dental trauma, and 85.1% mentioned that completing the questionnaire increased their interest in the topic and the need for more knowledge on the subject. Specific educational interventions and more effective communication about preventive dental services could significantly reduce the risk of dentoalveolar traumas and provide effective means for immediate intervention in case of an accident, thereby improving the oral health of young athletes.
