Abstract(s)

Specific aspects related to the traditional preparation of corpses for wakes and funerals are analysed. The two areas chosen for this comparative study were Ireland (years of 1938 and 1978) and Austria (period between 1929 and 1935). All the actions involved in this preparation are considered both in terms of religious belief and practical functionalism. A third dimension can be added when aspects related to the psychology of grief are included. As acções, atitudes e comportamentos associados à preparação dos cadáveres para velório e funeral na Irlanda (anos de 1938 e 1978) e na Áustria (anos entre 1929 e 1935) são o objecto deste estudo comparativo. Os principais factores considerados podem-se classificar em três áreas: crenças religiosas, funcionalismo ligado a questões práticas e psicologia do desgosto.
