Abstract(s)
Smoking and periodontal disease are themes already known in the scientific literature, sometimes related, but difficult to clarify with regards to the mechanism of action in the oral tissues. The aim here was to relate them and determine whether or not there is a true relationship, and more, in smoking being an active inducer in the development of periodontal disease in smokers and ex-smokers. For the accomplishment of this work, we used the following databases Bireme, Pubmed, and the institutional repository of Fernando Pessoa University. The criteria for inclusion in the study were articles of ten years of research, starting from 2007 through 2017. The conclusion is that the progression of periodontal disease in smokers becomes more critical; this situation is due to the whole systemic, immunological, and microbiological action that tobacco causes in individuals.
