Abstract(s)
Anxiety and self-confidence play crucial roles in competitive dance practice and can directly influence dancers' performance. The relationship between these two emotions and performance is complex, as both can help or hinder performance depending on how they are managed by the dancers. Anxiety is a natural reaction to situations that involve exposure and evaluation, such as dance competitions. Self-confidence, on the other hand, is one of the fundamental pillars for success in competitions, as dancers who believe in their abilities tend to perform better. The need to understand the relationship between anxiety and self-confidence in a specific group (hiphop dancers) became the aim of this study, as this group has not been extensively researched. This study seeks to provide more information in this area, exploring how these two factors interact and influence dancers' behaviour. This dissertation is organised into a general introduction, followed by two scientific articles. The first article presents a systematic review of the literature, analysing information on the topic under study. It concludes that while anxiety and self-confidence are widely studied in sports, they have received limited attention in the field of dance, particularly hiphop. The second article presents an empirical study that analysed the relationship between the factors under investigation, particularly whether high self-confidence is associated with lower levels of anxiety. Additional factors, such as years of experience, individual anxiety triggers, and feelings during competition, were also examined. The results indicate that anxiety and self-confidence are interrelated. Dancers with more years of competition experience tend to exhibit lower levels of anxiety. Furthermore, pressure from teachers/choreographers negatively affects performance success, with fear of failure being the primary source of competition anxiety. The study involved 42 participants aged between 18 and 32 years (M = 24.35). The main conclusion is that higher levels of anxiety are associated with lower levels of self-confidence, and vice versa, demonstrating a strong relationship between these two factors.
