O aparelho de expansão palatina ortodôntica tem sido amplamente utilizado com resultados clínicos satisfatórios e, muitas vezes, previsíveis. Vários aparelhos de expansão rápida da maxilar (ERM), tais como dispositivos ancorados por dentes, ou dentes e mucosa, ampliam o arco maxilar, abrindo a sutura palatina, solucionando a maioria dos problemas de ordem transversal da maxila. No entanto a expansão rápida da maxila pode causar efeitos periodontais e dentários indesejados, fazendo com que alternativas ao expansor tradicional ancorado nos dentes fossem desenvolvidas em um esforço para compensar esses efeitos colaterais. O objetivo deste estudo é fazer uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a Expansão Rápida da Maxila e suas aplicações clínicas. Considerando ainda que a ancoragem óssea ofereceu mais aspectos positivos que negativos, e, portanto, pode ser considerado um método confiável para tratar discrepâncias esqueléticas transversais.Due to the great demand of patients seeking orthodontic treatment, requiring maxillary expansion, the procedure of rapid maxillary expansion is presented as an excellent alternative for treating patients with maxillary transverse deficiency. The orthodontic palatal expansion device has been widely used with satisfactory and often predictable clinical results. Various rapid maxillary expansion (RME) appliances, such as tooth-borne, tissue-borne or tooth-tissue–borne devices, widen the maxillary arch by opening the midpalatal suture solving most of the problems of maxilla transversal disorder. However, rapid palatal expansion can cause undesired periodontal and dental effects. Recently, alternatives to the traditional tooth-anchored expander have been developed in an effort to offset these side effects. The purpose of this study is to make a review on Rapid Maxilla Expansion and its clinical applications. After analysis of the literature, it was possible to verify that palatal expansion solves most of the problems of the maxillary transverse deficiency, as it increases the perimeter of the arch and brings benefits to individuals who have later dental or skeletal crossbite.
