Foram utilizados 33 artigos, retirados da PubMed/Medline, Scielo e Scholar Google, recorrendo às seguintes palavras-chave em múltiplas combinações: “protetores bucais”, “atletas”, “saúde oral”. O trabalho apresenta desde os tipos de protetor bucal até à sua confecção, os aspetos mais importantes e pertinentes relacionados com o assunto. Os protetores bucais mostram ser eficazes na prevenção de lesões dentárias e traumas orofaciais, e simultaneamente, tornam-se benéficos para a prevenção de lesões orofaciais. Os médicos dentistas devem ser capazes de explicar as suas vantagens e promover a sua utilização, tanto a atletas como aos seus responsáveis, sejam pais ou treinadores. Os protetores bucais personalizados são os melhores e mais recomendados, sendo, por outro lado, os universais os menos recomendados e os que menor proteção oferecem.Mouthguards are protective equipment designed for sports, and this work aims, through literary analysis, to verify the importance of the same devices in the oral health of an athlete. The work presents from the types of mouthguards to their confection, the most important and pertinent aspects related to the subject. The mouthguards show to be effective in the prevention of dental injuries and orofacial traumas, and simultaneously, they are beneficial for the prevention of orofacial injuries. Dentists should be able to explain their advantages and promote their use to both athletes and their maintainers, whether parents or coaches.
