O sorriso desempenha um papel crucial não apenas na interação social, mas também na melhoria da qualidade de vida relacionada com a saúde. Um sorriso esteticamente agradável pode aumentar a autoconfiança. Apesar das diferentes perspetivas sobre o que define um sorriso estético, existem parâmetros objetivos que permitem medi-lo de forma consistente e científica. O presente trabalho de revisão narrativa visa destacar os parâmetros objetivos utilizados na avaliação estética do sorriso. Para tal, foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica abrangente em bases de dados como PubMed, ScienceDirect e Scielo, utilizando as palavras-chave “smile analysis”, “aesthetics of smile”, “aesthetic parameter of smile” e “dental aesthetics” combinadas entre si através dos operadores booleanos “OR” e “AND”. Um sorriso esteticamente agradável resulta da interação harmoniosa entre diversos elementos que o compõem, tais como os dentes, a arquitetura gengival e a moldura labial. Assim, ao analisar um sorriso, é imprescindível considerar diferentes aspetos anatómicos, incluindo a inclinação das linhas medianas dentárias e da linha média facial, a exposição dentária e gengival durante o sorriso, o aspeto gengival, o zénite gengival, a morfologia e dimensão dos dentes, o contacto interdentário, o corredor vestibular, a configuração dos bordos incisivos, a linha dos lábios, a cor, a textura e o brilho superficial dos dentes, bem como a proporção e simetria entre os dentes. A análise do sorriso é uma etapa fundamental no diagnóstico, planeamento, tratamento e prognóstico de qualquer tratamento médico-dentário com objetivos estéticos. Compreender e aplicar esses parâmetros objetivos pode melhorar significativamente os resultados estéticos dos tratamentos odontológicos, proporcionando um impacto positivo na confiança e satisfação dos pacientes.In recent times, the importance of oral and facial aesthetics has grown considerably in the field of dentistry. The smile plays a crucial role not only in social interaction but also in improving health-related quality of life. An aesthetically pleasing smile can boost self-confidence. Despite differing perspectives on what defines an aesthetic smile, there are objective parameters that allow for consistent and scientific evaluation. This narrative review aims to highlight the objective parameters used in aesthetic smile evaluation. To achieve this, an extensive literature search was conducted in databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scielo, using the keywords “smile analysis,” “aesthetics of smile,” “aesthetic parameter of smile,” and “dental aesthetics” in various combinations with the Boolean operators “OR” and “AND.” An aesthetically pleasing smile results from the harmonious interaction of various components, including teeth, gingival architecture, and lip framework. Thus, when analyzing a smile, it is essential to consider different anatomical aspects, including the inclination of dental midlines and facial midline, dental and gingival exposure during smiling, gingival appearance, gingival zenith, tooth morphology and dimensions, interdental contact, vestibular corridor, incisal edge configuration, lip line, color, texture, and surface gloss of the teeth, as well as proportion and symmetry between teeth. Smile analysis is a crucial step in the diagnosis, planning, treatment, and prognosis of any dental medical treatment with aesthetic objectives.
