An aesthetic smile can boost self-esteem and lead to greater social acceptance. But aesthetics in dentistry is subjective and is based on personal perception, patients' expectations and preferences, which may be influenced by past experiences, cultural and social influences, the variability of professional perception, and measurements of aesthetics which seem to deny this subjective element, yet it is difficult to quantify aesthetics in dentistry objectively. Understanding these different perceptions and effective communication between dentist and patient are essential to the success of aesthetic treatments and the satisfaction of individual expectations. The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether there is a bias between lay and professional expectations of aesthetic outcomes in dentistry, and to provide an overview of these variations or lack of variation in relation to a selection of dental aesthetic criteria which are, in brief: the proportions and colours of the teeth, their positions in relation to each other, the proportions and appearance of the gingiva. The aim is to offer a broader view of the differences in taste or requirements between the two groups, to help dentists better understand lay people's purely aesthetic expectations. As part of an integrative review, we selected 7 articles according to inclusion and exclusion criteria and using the following keywords: "aesthetics", "dentistry", "lay", "professional". All articles were retrieved from PubMed Central (PMC) and the Online Knowledge Library. In these articles, lay people and professionals are interviewed independently as part of studies seeking to understand the impact of modifying a criterion on the appreciation of a smile in general. However, these studies do not necessarily focus on the difference in perception between these two groups in particular: laypeople and professionals. This thesis highlights the lack of studies on this subject and seems to show that a difference between the two groups exists and therefore seems to justify taking an interest in this question. If there is an area where professionals and laypeople do not understand each other, then this represents a real area for improvement in the relationship between patient and carer, and therefore perhaps for obtaining more satisfactory results for the patient in terms of aesthetics.Atualmente, a estética desempenha um papel decisivo na vida de uma pessoa. Um sorriso estético pode aumentar a autoestima e levar a uma maior aceitação social. No entanto, a estética em medicina dentária é subjetiva e baseia-se na perceção pessoal, nas expectativas e preferências dos pacientes, que podem ser influenciadas por experiências passadas, influências culturais e sociais, na variabilidade da perceção profissional e nas medições da estética que parecem negar este elemento subjetivo, mas é difícil quantificar objetivamente a estética em medicina dentária. A compreensão destas diferentes perceções e a comunicação eficaz entre o dentista e o paciente são essenciais para o sucesso dos tratamentos estéticos e para a satisfação das expectativas individuais. O objetivo desta tese é investigar se existe uma tendência entre as expectativas leigas e profissionais dos resultados estéticos em medicina dentária, e fornecer uma visão geral destas variações ou falta de variação em relação a uma seleção de critérios estéticos dentários que são, em resumo: as proporções e cores dos dentes, as suas posições em relação uns aos outros, as proporções e a aparência da gengiva. O objetivo é oferecer uma visão mais ampla das diferenças de gosto ou de exigências entre os dois grupos, a fim de ajudar os dentistas a compreender melhor as expectativas puramente estéticas dos leigos. Como parte de uma revisão integrativa, selecionaram-se 7 artigos de acordo com os critérios de inclusão e exclusão, utilizando as seguintes palavras-chave: "aesthetics", "dentistry", "lay", "professional". Todos os artigos foram recuperados da PubMed Central (PMC) e da Online Knowledge Library. Nestes artigos, os leigos e os profissionais são entrevistados de forma independente como parte de estudos que procuram compreender o impacto da modificação de um critério na apreciação de um sorriso em geral. No entanto, estes estudos não se centram necessariamente na diferença de perceção entre estes dois grupos em particular: leigos e profissionais. A presente tese salienta a falta de estudos sobre este assunto e parece mostrar que existe uma diferença entre os dois grupos, justificando assim o interesse por esta questão.
