No entanto por consequência aumenta também o volume das vias aéreas superiores, assim como nas larguras ântero-posteriores do piso nasal. A existência de vários disjuntores – o de Haas, o de Hyrax, o de MacNamara e o MARPE – que permitem executar a expansão rápida da maxila, provocam entre outros efeitos secundários o aumento da base do nariz, aumentando o fluxo aéreo e melhorando concomitantemente a respiração do paciente. A descoberta de novos dispositivos como é o caso do dispositivo MARPE vieram trazer uma nova realidade, onde se pode tratar pacientes com a sutura palatina num estado mais avançado de ossificação sem um impacto tão grande a nivel dento-alveolar. Permitindo um impacto na qualidade de vida dos pacientes adultos.
