A contenção fixa, especificamente, precisa de materiais e métodos específicos que permitam o seu sucesso e duração ao longo tempo. Mesmo durante o período em que esta contenção está, a falha pode ocorrer provocando a recidiva ou movimentos dentários indesejáveis que podem comprometer também a saúde periodontal. Esta falha pode acontecer a nível do material ou do método escolhido ou mesmo no controlo do protocolo. O objetivo deste trabalho é perceber a origem do insucesso da contenção fixa e os requisitos para a êxitos a longo termo da contenção, através da comparação dos vários estudos randomizados incluídos que compararam diferentes dispositivos, sistemas adesivos e método da colagem. No sentido de responder ao objetivo mencionado, foi realizada uma pesquisa nos seguintes motores de busca: “PubMed”, ‘’Researchgate”, ‘’Google Scholar ‘’ e “Science direct”, sujeita a critérios de inclusão.The fixed retainer is an integral step in the orthodontic treatment plan, which allows the preservation of the post-treatment state both aesthetic and functional, the fixed retainer needs specific materials and methods which allow its success and duration over a long time. Even during the period of the presence of this retainer, sometimes its failure is found, which causes the relapse or undesirable dental movements that alter also the periodontal state, this failure can be due to the material or method chosen or even to the lack of control of the protocol. The aim of this work is to understand the origins of the failure of the fixed retainer and the requirements for the long-term success of the retainer, through the comparison of several randomized studies of different devices, adhesive systems and bonding method.
